How Many years have you been tutoring Amber?

This year will be our 14th year together!  In some ways it seems like it hasn’t been that long, and then other times I feel like we have been friends forever. 

What are some of your best memories and learning experiences with Amber?

One of my favorite memories is the time we had floor seats to the University of Louisville Men’s Basketball game.  She was so excited when a few players on the team, and the cheerleaders came over to meet us. I think we both smiled so much that night our cheeks hurt!  Other great memories are us just being silly, playing games, laughing and learning together.  Over the past few years, she has taught me so much about life and how important it is to enjoy every minute.  Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Do you all get together outside of tutoring? If so, what do you do?

We get together every Wednesday for tutoring at Amber’s apartment, which has now turned into our “Friends & Pizza” Day.  It’s my favorite day of the week, and I think she feels the same.  Recently we started baking together, which is so much fun!

How has tutoring made you grow as a person?

Amber truly is one of my dearest friends.  Over the years she has been there for me during low times, and then at my best.  When I started tutoring I thought I was going to be giving my time to help her, and what I learned is she has given me so much more in return.  I can’t imagine my life without her. 

Would you recommend others volunteer in tutoring or other programs or events at DSL? Why?

Volunteering with DSL is so rewarding and is a huge part of my life.  Whether it’s tutoring or volunteering at events, the joy in the experience is unmeasurable.  I would encourage anyone that is looking for a way to gain positivity in their life to consider checking out any opportunities to get involved.
