Friends Reunite Thanks to DSL & Special Olympics KY

John and Byron became acquainted at DSL seven years ago through our adult tutoring program and immediately formed a strong connection! They now collaborate as co-coaches for DSL’s Special Olympics Young Athletes, showcasing an exceptional partnership. John, a dedicated father to a child with DS, and JCPS teacher alongside Byron, a passionate DSL member with a love for sports and fitness, both find joy in mentoring children. Their infectious positivity and supportive approach not only introduce the youngest participants to the fundamentals of sports but also make learning engaging and enjoyable.

This program has been a staple at DSL for three years now, with two more sessions scheduled this spring on May 2 and May 9, from 6:00-6:45. We extend a warm invitation for anyone interested in joining us! The DSL Young Athletes group offers an early childhood play program designed for children aged 2 to 7, encompassing those with and without intellectual disabilities. Additionally, DSL welcomes older children who can still benefit from essential sports skills such as running, kicking, throwing, sharing, and teamwork. These skills not only enhance their participation in family, community, and school activities but also foster overall development.

For added convenience and personalized engagement, there is a Young Athletes APP, available for download on Apple or Google Play. This app tailors activities to your child’s developmental needs.  It’s a great resource for home activities.
