Safety Procedure Update for Families

August 19, 2019

DSL Family,

We wanted to send out more communication on the incidents that were reported this weekend. On Friday, August 16, WDRB reported that an arrest had been made after an incident involving a driver and one of our members on July 3. After investigation, DSL was assured that the event described in the news story occurred in July of 2018, not 2019.

The safety of our members is and always will be a top priority for Down Syndrome of Louisville. We can assure you that we are taking every step we can to ensure their safety while in our care and will advocate for those who serve our members to do the same.

Some measures that we have already taken include:

  • A Crisis Management Team has been created and will be meeting this week to debrief. New policy & procedures will be discussed and this will include a Crisis Communication Plan.
  • All public transportation drivers picking up or dropping off a member must sign a log that includes:
    • Name
    • Company
    • Name of Member
    • Vehicle ID Number
    • Date & Time of arrival
  • All visitors to DSL will sign in, and be given a name badge and lanyard to wear while in the building. Staff is aware that they should be looking for these badges at all times.
  • We are working with our security company to investigate ways to improve our procedures. One possibility will be a camera at the front drop-off area.
  • Our staff will be compassionately educating those members here at DSL this week on measures that can help keep them safe. DSL will also send out educational information and safety tips to all of our families this week.
  • We have a meeting with TARC3 this week to discuss these events and ask what they plan to do to ensure it does not happen again.

Again, we can assure you that the safety of our members is always our first priority and we will do everything in our power to keep them safe.

Sincerely,

Thom Nicholas, Board Chairman & Julie Torzewski, Executive Director
