Supplemental Security Income- Children under the age of 18
A minor child with a disability may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income. This benefit also qualifies the child for Medicaid health benefits. The approval of benefits is based on parents’ income. Regardless of household income, it is important to apply to receive a determination letter for state Medicaid waiver services in the future.

Supplemental Security Income- Adults 18 and over
When a person attains age 18, Social Security evaluates the individual based on the definition of disability for adults to receive benefits under Supplemental Security Income. You must apply for this benefit on behalf of your son or daughter to start SSI benefits as an adult. Call 1-800-772-1213 to set an appointment. Medicaid health benefit is included with SSI.
**Please note that your son or daughter has a $2,000 limit of assets to be and continue to be eligible for this benefit. There are financial tools that will protect your son or daughter’s federal benefits. See our Financial Resources Page for more information.
Social Security Disability Income- Adults 18 and over
Some Individuals with disabilities have earned enough work credits through their employment to qualify for Social Security Disability.

Social Security Retirement from Retired Parent or Disabled Parent -
A disabled person before age 22 may be eligible for child’s benefits when a parent applies for social security retirement or disability benefits. We consider this a “child’s” benefit because it is paid on a parent’s Social Security earnings record. They may also qualify for Medicare health benefits.

Social Security Survivors Benefits
An unmarried child of the deceased who is:

- Younger than age 18 (or up to age 19 if he or she is a full-time student in an elementary or secondary school); or
- Age 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22.
